URUGUAY: Vázquez fudges FTA deal with US

President Tabaré Vázquez last week rejected signing a trade promotion agreement (TPA) with the US, similar to the one the US recently signed with Peru. Instead, Uruguay will negotiate the exchange of goods with the US in the form of a trade and investment framework agreement (TIFA), which it will append to the bilateral investment treaty it already has. Vázquez said that this type of negotiation would not jeopardise Uruguay's position within Mercosur.
